Kirby Smart gives opinion on SEC spring transfer portal rule, discusses Georgia's recent activity in the portal
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Spring football has been in the books and the college football season has hit its "lull", if there truly can ever be considered one.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the team in the midst of that, relatively inactive in the transfer portal outside of a huge hit in landing former Arizona State quarterback Jaden Rashada.

The team did lose backup running back Andrew Paul and wide receiver Tyler Williams in the same time period, though.

Head coach Kirby Smart seemed satisfied with simply keeping his team intact when he was asked about at a Peach Bowl golf event in Greensboro, Georgia about the portal.

“It’s been great," Smart replied. "We were not really active in it. We kind of retained our roster and worried about the kids we got.”

It doesn't exactly come as a surprise that Smart would feel this way about Georgia's lack of portal involvement lately in comparison to other teams, given that the Bulldogs are largely expected to be the best team in the nation in 2024.

It's also safe to say the SEC transfer rule that prohibits players from transferring within the conference during the spring opening has Smart's stamp of approval.

“I’d be comfortable with that rule being permanent," Smart said.

He says he believes it's "important" that teams are not fighting each other's rosters during spring football.

"I don’t think it’s very good for our league. It’s probably good for other leagues because I’ve had several coaches that tell me outside our league they hope we keep that because it gives them an opportunity to gain SEC players. It’s something that’s been in for a while and I support it.”

Rules keeping players in place aside, Smart has done a fine job keeping his team together and retaining depth in an era in which players so commonly jump ship if they're not at the top of the depth chart.

“How do we sell you might be a two now, but you’re closer to going to the NFL Draft from here as a two then you are at our neighbor school as a one," Smart said. "The development piece is probably what we sell the most.”

It will be interesting to watch how things shake out for Georgia when the Bulldogs kick off the season on the road against the Clemson Tigers on Aug. 31.
